7th April, 2009 - Update on progress of the first student group, by Senior Tutor, Dr. Haim
Weinberg
First group of Israeli of students started!
The first group of 8 Israeli students began their online group psychotherapy doctorate program in Fall
2008. This group of students comprises 2 clinical psychologists, 2 social workers, 2 art therapists and 2
counselors/educators, all of them holding a Master degree. Dr. Haim Weinberg, the program senior
tutor, was appointed the personal tutor of each of these students due to his background as an Israeli
and building on the fact that it would be easy for the students to communicate and write assignments
in Hebrew. By the beginning of 2009, each of the students was having a weekly meeting via Skype
(TM) meeting with Haim to discuss reading materials, assignments and progress. An internet forum
has also been launched for the students to discuss both administrative and group process issues. The
students decided to start the program with the course "social bases of behavior". We discussed issues
of aggression, leadership, prejudgments and more, and connected them to group therapy (e.g. reading
Morris Nitsun's article about 'the anti group'. Reading papers about scapegoating in groups). Towards
the end of this course we've read and discussed issues about the Large Group and the Social
unconscious.
Face-to-face workshop of the first Israeli group
Between February 26-28, 2009, we held an intensive workshop in Jerusalem for the 1st Israeli group
studying the program. Dr. Haim Weinberg came to Israel to lead this workshop. He met individually
with each student before the workshop to establish working relations. The purpose of the workshop
was to integrate theory and experience and learn about group process from personal experience. On
the 1st day the members became more acquainted and connected to one another on a deeper level,
thus creating a cohesive group. On the 2nd day we focused on the meaning of academic studies and
the doctorate program for each of the students. On the 3rd day we discussed how the theoretical
material affected them and their work so far. Some parts of the workshop were led by the students.
Participation in Group Analytic Conference in Ein Gedi
Six out of the eight students of the 1st Israeli group participated in the international conference "kNOw
hard feelings" between March 5-7, 2009, organized by the Israeli Institute of Group Analysis in Ein
Gedi. The 3 day conference included lectures, small groups and a large Group sessions (co-led by Haim
Weinberg, the senior tutor of the course). The group of students created a very cohesive and
supportive group. They integrated some of the material they had studied with the experience in the
conference. Later, discussions about the Large Group experience continued on their forum.
Meeting with Dr. Morris Nitsun
During the Ein Gedi conference, on March 6th, 2009, the students met with Dr Nitsun to discuss the
issue of the anti-group. Dr. Morris Nitsum wrote a famous book about this issue which is an essential
part of the group analytic studies. He generously agreed to meet with the Israeli students during the
conference, talk about this concept and answer their questions.
On February 28, 2011, a contract was signed
between the Professional School of Psychology
and The Centre for Mind and Culture in
Singapore, to establish a doctoral program in
